Vikings, Outlaws, Big Foot and Talimena Dr.

It's All About The Ride!

Poteau is almost completely surrounded by mountains. Cavanal Hill (The World’s highest hill) to the west and the foothills of the Kiamichi’s to the South is where Talimena Scenic Drive is located.
The Talimena Scenic drive winds 54 miles along the crest of Mountains in the Ouachita National Forest (pronounced Wash-i-tah). One of America's most beautiful and historic mountain ranges and an unforgettable motorcycle ride through Oklahoma. Along the way you will crest the highest points between the Appalachians and the Rockies. A beautiful and mysterious region, the Ouachitas are rich in history and scenic wonders.

Residents near Heavener believe early Viking explorers visited the area. The Heavener Runestone is a ten-foot by twelve-foot high sandstone slab carved with symbols that are controversially attributed to the Vikings

Spiro Mounds is the only prehistoric, Native American archaeological site in Oklahoma. The mounds are one of the most important Native American sites in the nation.

Tales of outlaws including the Daltons, Jesse James, Belle Starr and others hiding at Robbers Cave and roaming the area.

Many people near the Kiamichi Mountains in Oklahoma have had sightings and experiences with something big and hairy. Beware of Bigfoot!
